Five limestone outcrops rise out of the coastal sand, each named for one of the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire, earth. Thuy Son is the one open to visitors, with a lift for anyone who would rather skip the stone steps.
Inside the rock is a cave system; the largest, Huyen Khong, has an opening in its roof that drops a shaft of light straight onto the altar below and moves it through the day.
At the foot of the mountains is Non Nuoc, a stone carving village four centuries old and still working. The site sits on the coast road between the city centre and Hoi An, so it fits into a morning before carrying on south.
